Oh You Pretty Thing~

31 Aug

I swear Create Space is like ka-CHOW with printing and shipping. I even ordered economy shipping and wasn’t expecting the 10-9 proof till September 13th. Still it shipped Friday and arrived in the 11AM mail Monday. Hot damn!

Hay Purdy~

The spine I couldn't measure D:

Draft Comparisons

While quite lovely, this is only my own personal copy for review and to experience ‘as a reader’ before I make the submission rounds. I’m already to Chapter Four and in Chapter One which is only two pages I spotted copy editing flubs. D: Like where I had combined sentences and kind of neglected to actually redraft the sentence. Or I did and I just totally had blinders on. I have no idea what my excuse is but there is no reason for and to appear four times in a sentence. D:

Other than that… It’s a little dandy of a book. I’m already having people ask me if the cover is the final version. XD I had to explain to them that depending on the company that picks it up there will likely be half-naked embracing dudes on the cover. *laughs* Out of the companies I’m looking at, if I get in with one of my top choices I’m really looking forward to their staff cover artists. My top picks have some amazing ones in their employ that I know could do John and Ahimsa justice. :3

Now back to reading. And lamenting the use of however in the final draft. :( (Pro Tip: Never ever use ‘however’ in a story. It’s a sign of laziness. It just means ‘nonetheless’ and is a fairly useless word.)

The Sketchbook Project

10 Jul

So I’ve recently signed up for The Sketchbook Project which in hopefully less than 25 words is a communal project open to anyone held by the Art House Co-Op and the Brooklyn Art Library. Sign up, pick a theme from the list, and they will send you a 8.5 x 5.5 Moleskine Cashier sketchbook for you to draw in and mail back in time for the gallery tour. It looked kinda fun and I thought I’d give it a go.

Last weekend I got my sketchbook in the mail and despite being a teeny little cashier there are a LOT more pages than I originally thought. Also the paper is kinda of that iffy Moleskine quality. Great for writing, not so much for drawing. In searching around about the project, the trick some people do is make works on their normal stock and glue it into the pages in a pretty fashion with origami papers or other things.  Some people get super creative and take the book all apart and rebind it with new stock all together. In looking at the binding technique used on the book I’m not so bold enough to try it for fear of ruining it. Some people even arrange the pages to fold out into giant posters! Or form other kinds of art like accordion folds! It’s pretty cool. :3

The theme I picked was ‘Happy Thoughts’ and initially while I hit a total roadblock called Intimidation I started making a list of things that make me happy and asking others what make them happy. And soon I had a good number of thumbnails as a starting point. Some really promising and some that need a little more development. It’s going to be my challenge to draw a lot of ‘cute’ kind of art with bunches of chibis, kittens, puppies, cupcakes, and on and on. I also have a few ideas for sections of the book that fold out into larger works. Pretty much all of it is pretty literal of happy things because I’m that kind of artist. While there’s bits of expecting people to roll with some of the details, people still look like people and cats are cats.

I’m looking forward to what comes of it. :3

In other news I had a fantastically TERRIBLE day for Weight Watchers. I just didn’t feel good today and while I started out on a good note it had quickly spiraled out of control by lunchtime. I kind of feel a depression creeping in since I’ve been sitting and doing nothing for too long. I need something to occupy my time again with deadlines to meet. I need to get back writing. I can feel it kind of slip from me and I need to keep busy. For me not to be busy it’s the kiss of death and results in me raiding the fridge. D:

Of Slams And Mangoes!

26 May

Looking for a little something to do this summer? How about June? How about until August? Are you artistically inclined? LOOK NO FURTHER~

NaNoMangO is the bi-annual artists answer to NaNoWriMo. I co-mod the happy little thing with one of my BFFs the comm founder Rose Meloche of Digital Midnight. At it’s core the concept is terribly simple, 30 comic pages in 30 days. You wouldn’t believe for the non-professionals in the crowd how difficult this is. As a former comic creator, I’ve only completed the challenge three times in the ten rounds I’ve participated in. It’s good fun and the crowd is a very delightful little bunch. I love them all like they were my kids. Only my kids are four-legged and meow. We kick off on midnight May 30th and it’s never too late to join in! We also run in November. Which is a hideous logistical nightmare every time for people doing WriMo. :x I did WriMo (and won!) last year as WELL as doing MangO (and won!) :D

Art Slam is run by my dear darlings of the Great White North TL Massey, Kat, and a gaggle of their buddies. Art Slam runs from start of June to the end of August and has three different levels of participation. And they have trophies! TROPHIES! NaNoMangO doesn’t have trophies! I need to get on that! :O I actually seriously flunked out of Art Slam when it first ran last year as I had a lot of stuff going on in the headspace y’see. But I’m looking forward to see what pretty things turn up in the comm and maybe featuring a couple here on NomChron. :3

Happy Halloween!

24 Oct

Things have been mighty quiet on over here, let’s see if we can change that!

10-9 celebrated it’s five year anniversary on…you guessed it October 9th!  There was far too many sugary snacks and savory delights that day that obliterated my sensible eating habits but OH what a way to go!

A few small updates the prequel short story 10-9: One (ever so aptly titled) is slowly but surely undergoing a round of edits with a fine tooth comb. Go figure I find one missing or miused word in my proof copy that pretty much makes the whole thing a wash. Perfectionist!  I am one.

There’s been a couple other short stories that have been drafted namely the rather Hate Crime Awareness piece I Can’t Change This, and the silly and fluffy pieces Hold On To Me and Devil In Disguise. All three will hopefully pass my horrifying round of edits and be posted here in the next few days.  They’re still in the first draft stage but I’d like to correct the overly glaring errors.

The main 10-9 story I’m happy to say has clocked a whopping 105 pages so far once I plugged in all my random scenes into one document.  Who knew writing in a non-linear fashion could work! It’s slow going and there’s been a few bumps, bruises, creative stalls and just plain creative ADD but things are shaping up. :3

And now I leave you with a little ray of sunshine, cute lil’ teenagerly Ahimsa all dolled up for Halloween. :D   Enjoy!
